Lesson #1

With this tutorial, I will show you my technique of China Painting from how to prepare the greenware, proper way to hold your doll, paint consistency and so on up to how to enhance eyes.  Everything of this lesson was learned thru a lot of practice and observing what I liked on dolls and what I wanted to modify.  I paint from 1" scale to 1/2" scale in the same fashion and all come out with the desired look

Tools & Paint
I use water base medium and matte (satin) china paint except for the pupil of the eye

Paintbrushes:  -Small brush to smooth out greenware
                           - Modified (remove bristle until you                                                                                               have about 10-15 left)Silver Spotter #10/0
                           - Silver Spotter #5/0
                           - Microbrush large (2)

Paint & Medium:  - Seeley's Ultra Fine Line Medium
                                - Pompadour Red
                                - Whipped Cream
                                - Eyebrow #4 Dark Brown
                                - Satin Black
                                - Onyx Black (gloss)

  Other:               - Baby Wipes
                             - Magnefying glass
                             - Orange Stick
                             - Ceramic Tile
                             - Tap water
                             - A bit of patience, practice and perseverance ;-)

Preparation of the greenware
For this phase you will need  your orange stick, smoothing brush and tap water

are leveled.

Important Tip:  Never wash over your dolls face, you want to keep the details as intact as possible, which makes it easier to paint and the end result  is very defined & beautiful face.  If the features of the face are right.. SKIP this step

Paint Consistency & How paint is loaded on your brush
Mix your dry china paint with a drop of medium.  The consistency of your paint should be of toothpaste, smooth and free of clumps.  Not too thick, so you can make a fine line without bloshes;  But thick enough so it doesn't run and will be able to move it around.

These are terms I will be using throughout the lesson, its very important to have your paint loaded correctly for the task at hand. I have no idea if there are better words out there to describe this but these will have to do for now :-)

                                                                                                                                                   the paint

How to hold your doll & proper position of brush
For each and every line you paint, move the hand holding the doll to be perpendicular with the bristle of the brush and not the other way around

Craddle your doll in your hand like shown                        Your other hand holding the paintbrush:
the side of your hand should be resting on
the hand holding the doll, this way you will
have complete control of your brush and
you will be able to make thin straight line

Now that I have bored you with the technical side of this lesson.... Let's paint!!!!
